This is the situation most players dread — a weak hand up against a strong dealer card. Many choose to Stand out of fear of busting, but basic strategy says Hit.
Here's why: if the dealer's up card is a 10, they most likely have a 20. Standing on 16 means you are almost certain to lose. By Hitting, you give yourself a chance to draw a 5 or lower to reach 21, or land anywhere between 17 and 21. Your odds of winning improve — even if only marginally — when you Hit.
A hard 11 is generally the ideal Double Down situation — you have a strong chance of hitting 21 with one more card. But when the dealer shows an Ace, many players hesitate to Double Down.
In single-deck Classic Blackjack, basic strategy says Double Down on 11 against a dealer Ace. For multi-deck games where the dealer hits on Soft 17, the correct play is Hit only. Check the table rules before making this decision.
Soft 19 sounds like a strong hand, and many players would simply Stand. But basic strategy says you should Double Down when the dealer is showing a 6.
Why? A dealer showing 6 is in an extremely weak position — there's a high chance they'll bust. By Doubling Down on Soft 19, you fully exploit the dealer's vulnerability and increase your stake in a situation that's already in your favour.
This is every blackjack player's most dreaded scenario. You're holding two 8s (a 16 — the worst hand possible) against a dealer 10. Many players choose to Stand or Hit, but basic strategy makes it clear: Split.
While it may seem counterintuitive to split your money in a tough spot, the math clearly shows that splitting 8+8 against a 10 is better than playing 16 as a single hand. Each 8 starts fresh as a new hand — with a much better chance of hitting 18 (8+10) than trying to win with 16.
